Having
Cingular for my cell phone carrier these last few years while my parents
had Sprint, I usually waited until 9:01 pm to call them so that I could
use my nights & weekend minutes. Eventually I had conditioned myself
that longer phone calls to them needed to wait until after 9 pm or weekends,
while shorter phone calls could be done during the day. A couple of months
ago we combined our various phone plans into a family plan. Now I can
call Mom and Dad anytime and it would be “free.” But even now I still
have to get used to the idea that I can call them anytime and not wait
until 9:01 pm. Isn't it interesting to see how this practice can occur
in our prayer life too? How often do we put off talking to God, thinking
we need to wait until later to talk to him? Maybe we're waiting until
it is a better time to talk. Maybe we're waiting because we'd rather try
to solve things our way first before submitting them to God. Maybe we're
waiting because it is a small thing and we don't want to waste God's anytime
minutes. But God is available anytime and all the time. We don't need
to wait until 9:01 pm or until church on Sunday mornings or when a crisis
happens. There are no dropped calls. No static. No wasting his anytime
minutes. The line is always clear from his end, no “Can you hear me
now, God?” We can talk to him continuously, 24/7 even, and because we
are all on his family plan, it would be free. Now that's music to our
ears, right?
