FOOD
FOR THOUGHT
EAT
THIS BOOK Cindy Hong
I
was born loving food. Back then, it was baby food, mashed carrots and
pureed spinach. Then I graduated to chocolate and deep dish pizzas. Present
day favorites would fill up the remainder of this space. Despite this
love for food, I still approach each New Year with the hope of at least
partially curbing my intake, to resolve to practice the new buzzword in
healthy eating, “portion control.” To show that, in fact, I was making
an honest attempt for 2007, I even went to IKEA in December and bought
new 9” dinner plates and retired my 11” platters to force myself to eat
smaller portions. Now all this eating on smaller plates stuff makes me
wishful for those days (which never really existed anyway, except in my
mind) when I could eat whatever and whenever I wanted, without any harmful
or unhealthy consequences. How I wish I could go to the doctor's and get
a prescription that allows me to eat: “6 times/day, to be taken with Starbucks
frappuccinos, bubble tea, and cokes as needed.” Something like that. Well,
Dr. God did just that. His script? Eat this book. One of his patients,
John, did just that (Rev 10:9-10). What a great metaphor eating is for
reading God's word. The part I love is that here I can eat all I want
(Todai on Monday, China Bear on Tuesday…) and I'll never gain weight,
get indigestion, heartburn, or a stomach ache. Instead, the more we eat,
the healthier and stronger we'll be. Forget portion control! This year
(it's still January, right?), let's feed on God's word and eat to our
heart's content! Soup's on!
