THE
BIG ST
Cindy Hong
Back in high school we would label
our relationships with the opposite gender as the Big ST or the Little
ST. The Big ST meant spending big time together, while the Little ST meant
just that, spending little time together. The goal, if you liked the person,
was the Big ST . As Daddy's girl growing up, I couldn't wait until he
got home from work so that we could play catch in the backyard or tennis
at the local courts. No matter the activity, I loved spending time with
my Dad. Since it's been a few years that I've gone home to North Carolina
, the days of the Big ST are probably over. Nowadays we try to maximize
our visits by all of us gathering in Detroit , where Grandma, aunts and
uncles, nieces and nephews, and grandkids live. With lots of activities
going on, it is still a challenge to spend quality time with Dad. But
about a year and half ago, he flew out to help me paint my newly acquired
condo. For four days we colored the walls together and ate all our meals
together. After almost a decade away from home, it was great having this
Big ST with Dad. But as great as the Big ST is with my earthly father,
it is even better with our heavenly Father. Spending time in His presence
brings refreshment and joy to our souls. Spending time at His feet, like
Mary, produces comfort and delight to our being. Spending time in His
Word fills our hunger for Him. Nothing beats the Big ST with a loved one,
and our heavenly Father is our loved one par excellence. When our earthly
fathers are far away, no longer around, or not in the picture, our heavenly
Father is always with us. On this Father's Day, may we take time to do
the Big ST with the fathers in our lives.
