THE
PAUSE BUTTON

One of the blessings
of moving to a new city is not knowing where anything is. Not knowing
where the mall or movie theater were meant I didn't spend as much money
initially in Houston as I did with friends in Dallas . And since Blockbuster
was walking distance to the apartment, I started converting my Discover
Card points into free Blockbuster rentals and began watching movies from
the comfort of my living room. Adjusting from the movie theater-sized
screen with surround sound to my 13” mono speaker TV took some time.
But gradually I began to notice some of the perks. If I really liked the
movie, I could watch it again. For free. If I didn't like the movie, I
could fast forward and skip the slow parts. If there was a funny line,
I could immediately go back, watch it again, and laugh until my sides
split. And if I needed to take a ____ break (fill in the blank), I could
press the pause button. Ah, the pause button. To pause, slow down, and
take a break from the pace of life. Life with Jesus requires space and
time and is meant to be lived with pauses. We need to press pause so that
we can sit with Him. I want to live on fast forward at times, 2x or 4x,
8x and even 20x. But God isn't into skipping scenes, jumping from scene
3 to 13. He wants to journey with us through the scenes of our lives,
and this thing He wants to do with us, it takes time. It takes us to press
pause and just pause. With an extra day off this week to celebrate Independence
Day, may we spend part of that gift of time pausing before Him. Be
still and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10) . II
