FOR THOUGHT

Even though this week is Thanksgiving, I had my thanksgiving meals
a few weeks ago. On this particular Friday, we were surprised with a home
cooked meal by a top notch chef. We sat down to a delicious meal of fish
(boneless, of course!) marinated with black bean sauce, baked with slices
of tender tofu, scooped over rice, and Chinese broccoli laced with oyster
sauce on the side. The church office that's usually filled with sounds
of Cantonese was suddenly quiet, chewing noises heard in stereo though
a surround sound-like speaker system, and groans of pleasure echoing off
the walls. The rest of the afternoon was a blur of activity, running around,
arranging chairs, organizing supplies, and finishing the lesson for Awana
that evening. Usually a couple of hours before Awana my stomach gets nervous
that sometimes I can't eat. As I was going through my mental checklist
wondering if I'd forgotten anything, a friend stopped by the first floor
registration desk and handed me a chicken shawerma, a delicious Mediterranean
sandwich from Fadi's. All activity came to a stop as I spared a few seconds
to smell the still-warm sandwich and bask in this kind gesture, before
returning to the beads, badges, and patches for the Awana clubbers. By
the time I got home, it was after 11 pm and I was starving. I stood at
the kitchen counter and savored every bite of that sandwich. The thought
of eating only half of it and saving the rest for the next day was just
that, a thought. As my stomach was digesting this rich, late night meal,
it was as if the two physical meals that God “happened” to provide
that day was a picture of the abundance of spiritual food He provides
for all of us, every day. Only with His meals, we will never suffer heartburn
or acid reflux. As we celebrate Thanksgiving this Thursday, may the turkey
and ham we eat remind us of the rich spiritual food we enjoy because of
Jesus. We may feel slightly bloated this week, but isn't it good to know
that we can never overstuff ourselves with God's food? Bon appetit!
