Some
“Salt & Light Concert” afterthought
Pastor Jonathan Ling
I thank
the Lord for the Salt and Light fund raising concert held at HCC on January
27. The programs include vocal and instrumental solos, dance, instrumental
ensemble and choral presentations.
The
HCC Noon Choir was one of the five (5) community choirs. I noticed the
many differences between our choir and the other choral groups. The community
choral groups had an average of 40 members in each group. It was evident
that they are well trained, well prepared and enthusiastic about their
singing. Some groups sang all their songs from memory.
In
contrast, although our choir sang very well, it is rather small with only
3 or 4 male voices in each section; therefore we were limited in our repertoire,
flexibility and song selections. It has been said that the ideal ratio
of number of choir member and the size of the congregation should be 1
to 10.
Christianity
is known as “a singing religion”. Is it still true? Many people would
sing secular folk or art songs with a community group or karaoke to entertain.
What about Christians who have the talent and gift in music? Have they
considered serving the Lord and witnessing for Him in a choir? May the
Lord raise up His people to sing powerfully, to build His church and to
glorify His name. Psalm 135:3 says: “Praise the Lord, for the Lord is
good; sing praise to His name, for that is pleasant.”
