Just
Do It
Cindy Hong
Several months ago a friend asked me
to write a weekly blog on his site about various things I'm reading for
school. Apart from using the computer for email and basic stuff, I'm pretty
low-tech, preferring books and magazines, pen and paper. I have no idea
about blogging and what it entails, from how to write one to how to post
one. So I did what I usually do when I don't know anything about something:
Find a book about it or read a wikipedia entry on it. Being a book lover,
I checked out 3 books on blogging, two in those yellow and black bumblebee-colored
series ( Blogging for Dummies and WordPress for Dummies
if you must know the titles). After reading and renewing them twice,
I returned the books to the library, all without posting a single blog.
I wrote down ideas, even typed out a couple of rough drafts, but still
didn't post. I got on the website itself, looked around the WordPress
world, and logged off without writing anything. And despite the encouragement
from my ever-patient friend, I still have not blogged a jot or tittle.
All this made me examine my standard operating procedures in life. My
shelves are stuffed with books on Bible study, prayer, living the Christian
life. For some reason, if I'm struggling with something, my first inclination
is to buy a book on that topic and see what someone has written on it.
Why don't I just go immediately to God with that struggle, I don't know.
Some mornings I'd rather read a book on what someone else says about God
instead of reading His book. Why don't I just go to Scripture and soak
in His love letter to me, I don't know. Just like I'm doing everything
else but posting a blog, many times I find myself doing everything else
but spending intentional time with God. Before opening the Bible, I want
a clean room to read in. So I clean the room. In preparation for prayer,
I get out pen and paper to list items to pray for, and soon find myself
writing the day's “to do” list. Perhaps I'm a born procrastinator;
perhaps Nike's slogan “Just Do It” is onto something concerning the
human psyche and our spiritual lives. What would this week look like if
we were to “just do it” or “just go for it” in aligning ourselves
with Jesus and His work in our lives? And whatever consequences brought
on by prayer or reading God's word, we can worry about later.
