From Sin

How
do you view sin? Is it the result of electro-chemical imbalances that
result in biological dysfunction? Is it low-self esteem that results in
repression of one's true self? Is it those attitudes or actions that hurt
other people? Is it just being out of harmony with our immediate environment?
Is it only breaking the rules of God?
How
do you respond to your sin? Do you simply forget about it because Jesus
died for it and now "I don't have to fight for holiness"? Do
you feel you must confess EVERYTHING or else risk losing your status before
God? Do you think your “good heart” outweighs the sin and so
it doesn't matter? Do you think sin=fun? Do you feel it doesn't matter
if no one else gets hurt? Do you think it only matters if you get caught?
Is it ok if everyone else is doing it? Do you think it's the same as making
a mistake?
All of these
are improper ways of viewing sin. At its core, sin is both something we
have and something we do. It's the result of replacing God with ourselves
as master of our lives. Sin is something that is serious and should be taken
seriously. We are called to repent of our sin and pursue holiness but we
can't do that until we take sin seriously. This week consider why would
God go to such extreme lengths (becoming a man and dying on a cross) to
provide a means for us to be free from sin if sin wasn't a big deal.
